The Resettlers: Farming Against the Anthropocene
PLANETKULT Phase 3 - PREMIERE
In Die Umsiedler*innen: Ackern gegen das Anthropozän, andcompany&Co. reinterpret Heiner Müller’s scandalous 1961 GDR play Die Umsiedlerin oder Das Leben auf dem Lande (The Resettler Woman or Life in the Countryside). Today, the Earth is under pressure from intensive agriculture, global warming, and species extinction, while humanity dreams of colonizing distant planets. A crew of habitat dwellers takes a stand: “We’re staying here!” They tend to plants, care for the soil, and fight against the poisoning of the biosphere.
In this final phase of the PLANETKULT series, things get dirty: the patriarchy ends up in a self-watering hermetosphere, queer garden beds take shape, and millet is worshipped as a superfood. For in the 21st century, class struggle is fought over calories and proteins. It is time to reignite the debate on collectivization. Must we leave the Earth – or will we finally learn to inhabit it differently?
In the PLANETKULT series, art, science, and activism come together on stage, mutually inspiring and enriching one another. In the third phase, farming scholar and activist Sophie von Redecker and biologist Ulf Soltau (“Gärten des Grauens”) contribute their combined expertise. On December 5, they will discuss their work in a talk following the performance.
